Freshers' nights and campus nights to be banned in universities

Kenya Parents Association has come out strongly to condemn and demonize a number of campus events their children are exposed to. This is after a wake of deaths reported at campuses and involving young people engaging in alcoholism and drug abuse; precisely, they sought to have the famous fresher’s nights and campus nights banned from universities all over the country. News from our campus correspondent indicates that The Parents Association has made an application to the Education cabinet secretary to have the matter addressed.

This application comes in a wake where several students have been involved in fights, young women raped after night outs of excessive drinking and just recently, the late Ms. Keino, an MBA student at the University of Nairobi who was brutally murdered and her body found dumped by the roadside by unknown assailants. Several people have been questioned with regard to the death but the killers are yet to be nabbed and punished.

Fresher’s nights are widely publicized campus night outs where newly admitted students from high school gather to have an opening celebration; it is an eye opener that welcomes the young adults in the eagerly awaited adulthood life where freedom, alcoholism, drugs and sex are a common thing. While these happenings really excite these young adults, it has badly affected their guardians and parents who now want the government to intervene and bring a stop to this madness.

When our campus correspondent sought opinions from students, a University of Nairobi student only identified as Mercy was very disgusted by the news that the highly respected event which is like a ritual to them is almost being scrapped. She further termed the move as a failure and out of place as every young adult had the freedom to choose what is right or wrong. A young man going by the name Pato believes that even if these events are banned, students will still find their way to these parties elsewhere and engage in the vices, “it’s a matter of choice,” he added.
