Nairobians now want donkey meat legalized

The petition
It is now emerging that Nairobi residents now want donkey stew for their buffet lunch and dinner. This is after an outfit only identified as “Nairobi Nyama Choma Movement” petitioned with the government Public Health and Sanitation department to legalize consumption of donkey meat and milk. The petition in part read, “We want our rights as we can prove that donkey meat is safe, we ourselves consume it and we have fed our families and many Nairobians with the meat with no health consequences," a claim that cannot be authenticated.” It further quoted that learning from countries like China, dog meat is a delicacy enjoyed by the whole family, and rats are a breakfast delicacy in Cameroon while the Congolese never miss a barbeque of baboon meat a single day.

But why?
As it emerges, the movement is a highly organized crime group that engages in supply of donkey meat, illegal goods, extortion and is responsible for the several kidnappings that have been happening in Nairobi and its neighboring counties. They even claim that donkey meat is relatively cheaper compared to beef, pork and chicken. A fully grown donkey in the black market goes for a low price of Shs 3,000, fair enough to assure Nairobians an affordable meal at this juncture of hard economic times and inflation. A man who did not wish to be named termed the matter a personal issue; “Just like the Chinese eat dogs, and I too can decide whether to or not to grab a donkey buffet,” he exclaimed.

Man dies after consuming Mutura
In the event of this, a man in central Kenya has succumbed to stomach pains with several others hospitalized after consuming Mutura, a delicacy made from intestinal organs of an animal. It is alleged that the meal was made from a carcass of a dog.

Naivasha a main source of donkey meat
Several incidences of illegal meat being consumed have been on the rise with Naivasha recording the highest number of reports. Just recently, 20 donkey carcasses were found in a bush in the town and it has been reported the meat is sold in Nairobi by a highly organized cartel owning several restaurants in the city and its neighborhoods. Nairobi PPO Benson Kibui has since come forth to rubbish the news and stated that anyone found selling illegal meat or engaging in any other activity that is against the law will be arrested and prosecuted.
