While having a sip of my favourite beer with buddies this
weekend over a game in the EPL, another very interesting subject arose. As we
sat at a balcony of a famous entertainment spot with a view overlooking the
streets, a spot Nairobi men will always sit to catch a glimpse of the beautiful
‘mamas’ crisscrossing down the streets, and like one of my buddies put it, it’s
like a beauty peagent only that in this rare one; when one beauty passes the
stage, they don’t come back but instead more and more keep coming. Well, this
time round, we were not in Nairobi but had travelled a short distance to the neighboring
town of Ongata Rongai.
Why so many beauties
in the town?
As the talk intensified, we sought to unravel where all
these beauties were doing in this small dusty town. As the findings; ‘Ronga’, as
is popularly known, is a major hub of several private and public universities
in Kenya. These include Africa Nazarene University, Catholic University, Multimedia
University, and JKUAT just to name a few among a good number of colleges that
have put up base. For sure, you would accept if someone told you that these
universities admit female students through beauty peagents.
Booming business
Economically, the town seems to be doing pretty well as over
8 banks and microfinance institutions with national outreach are visible;
Barclays, KCB, Unaitas, Rafiki DTM to name a few. Chain stores like Tuskys,
Nakumatt, Uchumi, Tumaini and Cleanshelf have also invested millions of
shillings in the town with several Healthcare brands like Aga Khan Hospital,
KNH and Nairobi Women’s Hospital visible. The relatively cheaper rental rates
in the town is a major attraction to the large population of Nairobi’s working
class thus strongly boosted the growth of real estate developments in the town.
Owing to its proximity to the capital city, Hotels and lodges are also
available thanks to the popularity of the town in hosting both local and
international tourists visiting parks such as the Nairobi National park and
game reserves in the county.
Posh Matatus
As is anywhere in the world, a good economy must have a good
transport network. Well, Ronga’s is very healthy as you can find the popular Matatus
plying the Nairobi-Rongai route 24/7. The commuter vehicles are well pimped you
would think you are in a cruise ship. They bubble with the latest music tunes
and are notorious for overlapping traffic jams. However, a little failure of
the town is the nuisance caused by the narrow roads and careless dumping by
residents
